But the reality is most organizations still just pay lip service to these activities, even though they claim to have recognized the costs of knowledge loss. The costs of recovering or recreating lost knowledge critical to future business performance is still a relatively taboo subject. No executive wants to go to his or her Board and admit performance is off because of failure to retain essential know-how, so they find other ways to explain it. Given the looming shortage of mid-careers in certain high skill areas (eg. nuclear power, nursing, welding) many organizations will have no choice but to reconnect with retirees who have these essential skills. For access to my ongoing research on these issues see my website: www.LostKnowledge.com Cheers, Dave DeLong</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/1295779623325219402/2544915022927441202/comments/default/6143800731125652731'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/1295779623325219402/2544915022927441202/comments/default/6143800731125652731'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://infocognito.blogspot.com/2009/08/knowledge-retention-stopping-bleeding.html?showComment=1251384796220#c6143800731125652731' title=''/><author><name>David DeLong</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/12528754587912493384</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image xmlns:gd='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005' rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:in-reply-to xmlns:thr='http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0' href='http://infocognito.blogspot.com/2009/08/knowledge-retention-stopping-bleeding.html' ref='tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1295779623325219402.post-2544915022927441202' source='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/1295779623325219402/posts/default/2544915022927441202' type='text/html'/><gd:extendedProperty xmlns:gd='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005' name='blogger.itemClass' value='pid-1327155744'/><gd:extendedProperty xmlns:gd='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005' name='blogger.displayTime' value='August 27, 2009 9:53 AM'/></entry></feed>
